Bishop Rt. Rev Alfred Livingstone Moore, after whom this school is named was the eldest son of Dr. Edward Moore, the Principal of St. Edmund Hall , Oxford and was born in England in 1870. He took his MA from the university of Oxford and became a missionary of the Church Missionary Society in India. When he was just 32 years , he became the Principal of the CMS College , Kottayam. After an eventful career in India and abroad, he retired from service in 1937 and went back to England. On 22nd Sept, 1944 he left for his Heavenly abode. It was after the name of this great saintly Bishop that the “Bishop Moore Vidyapith” came into existence. May the Heavenly Father grant grace that the “Bishop Moore College” founded in memory of this man of God uphold the lofty principles which the saintly and scholarly Bishop tried to inculcate by precept and example.
This institution which is an outreach work of the Bishop Moore College, Mavelikara, was a long cherished desire of Prof. George. M. Cherian and Rev. K.C Mathew. Mr. George. M.Cherian suggested certain projects and attempts were made to start some. Rev K.C Mathew was well led to bring about a very proper outreach work of the college and the Vidyapith was the outcome. Back in 1975, the lack of a good Nursery School in Mavelikara was keenly felt by a number of parents. Informal talks initiated by Prof. George. M. Cherian with Rev. K.C. Mathew, Mr. V.O. Ninan and Rev. Itty Mathew finally led to the founding of a school on the 10th June 1975. It was then christened Bishop Moore Nursery School. The founder teacher was Miss Zona Callaghan, who is no more. With funds kindly lent by Dr. P.M. Mathew, Pallathu, a small building 50’x 20’ was hurriedly constructed and the inauguration of the Nursery School was officiated by the Rt. Rev. T.S. Joseph, when Mr. K. C. Jacob, Principal, Cochin Refineries School was the Chief Guest and Speaker.
This school started as an English Medium Residential School. After a series of discussions and negotiations, it was finally decided to raise the school to a High school, affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination. The CSI Madhya Kerala Diocese agreed to accept the management of the school. Std I to IV were added as early as January 1976. Buildings were extended by another 75 ft. Std V to VII was added in Jan 1977. The school was renamed as Bishop Moore Vidyapith by a resolution passed in a meeting held on 5 th Jan 1976. The meritorious services rendered by the Diocese in the field of education in the past was , of course, there to our credit. To usher in the High School, we had to plan a good building. Mr. George. M. Cherian raised funds from abroad and the construction of a three- storeyed building was started in June 1977 and an adjacent single storeyed building was started in July 1979. The Council, after examining the facilities provided in the school, granted us affiliation which came through on the 31st Oct 1978.
The first batch of students was ready to appear for the ICSE Examination in February 1981. We sent up our first batch of students for the ISC examination in 1998.
A team of 30 well qualified teachers constituted the teaching Staff then. The administrative Staff were Mr. K. V. Abraham Principal, Mr. John Thomas (Vice Principal) and Mrs. M. Zachariah, Headmistress for the Primary Section.
To keep up the strength of the school and give the privilege for children to study in the same school till the plus two levels, a joint effort was made and consequently, children could choose for the ICSE or SSLC stream after standard VII. This principle was welcomed by most parents, and children found happiness in continuing in the Bishop Moore Vidyapith. Accordingly the SSLC stream was introduced in 1984 and HSE in 2002.
A few eminent Principals have controlled the rudder of the SSLC and HSE stream. Every year demand for admission here is on a rising scale. Mr. Mathew Varghese, Mr. Iype John and Mr. Daniel John and Mr. Joseph K. John served as Principals in the Higher Secondary section. At present the Principal is Mr. Thomas Oommen under whose competent administration the school is gaining formidable heights. From 1993 -2004 Prof. George M. Cherian served whole heartedly as the Principal, assisted by Mrs. Aleyamma Mathew. Prof Thomas Kurien took charge as Bursar. It was a glorious period in the history of the Bishop Moore Vidyapith. Mrs. Aleyamma Mathew took up as Principal from 2004-2006 with Rev. Dr. Kuruvilla George as Director. God’s blessings were abundant. Mr. A.C George took up the reigns from 2006 – 2010. Till 2008 Rev. Alexander Cherian worked as Director and Bursar.
After a span of 3 years Rev. Alexander Cherian was replaced by Rev. Shaji Jacob Thomas as Bursar. After Mr. A.C George retired from service in April 2010, Mr. Abraham Philip took charge of the Principal. To aid and assist the Principal in his administrative duties, Mrs. Elizabeth John was appointed Vice Principal. The hand of the Almighty was felt in every endeavour of the school. Rev. Dr. Shajan A. Idiculla took over as Bursar in 2011 and continues till date. Mr. Abraham Philip continued till 2012 after which Mrs. Aleyamma Mathew, with her experience of 31 years in Doha, both as teacher and Principal has graced the position. She is excellently guided by the Bursar. Today the school is full- fledged. We have nearly 3100 students and 170 staff of which 134 are teaching staff 36 non -teaching staff and 7 guest teachers to teach XI and XII. We have been securing cent percent results through the years.
The school has grown to unimaginable heights under the able administration of the Principal and staff. We believe the destiny and character of several boys and girls will be moulded along the right path in the very congenial educational atmosphere of Vidyapith under the able leadership of the well qualified and experienced teachers. This is evident from the fact that one of our senior teachers Mrs. Esmie Fernandez was given the National Award for the best teacher. Our School has taken big strides for the near future. We have a big library with 15 thousand books. Our children are also privileged to have very spacious laboratories (Physics, Chemistry & Biology). A language Lab, Computer lab fully furnished with good teachers is an additional asset. A music room, a Creative Art room, a beautiful courtyard with a colorful garden add to the beauty of our school.
An addition of the near future is a Nursery School with all the modern facilities. The area in front of the nursery school is like a dream in marble with a beautiful lawn and a good fountain. To activate the sportsman spirit of the children, the School has provided a very good Volleyball Court and a Basket Ball Court. Students just yearn for the PT period when they can play and enjoy to the full. The area of the main entrance is tarred and beautified. Our gratitude goes to our former Principal Mr. A.C George and Bursar Rev. Shaji Jacob Thomas.
To cater to the academic requirements of the students, a new stream of Commerce has been added to the curriculum. A good number of children are fortunate to have made their choice and take pride in being, in the same school which they cherished and loved. The name and reputation of the Vidyapith has reached far and wide with immense publicity. Consequently the strength of the school has reached its flash point. In pursuance with this, the division in each class had to be increased almost every year. We take this solemn moment to give thanks to all those gifted hands that have worked laboriously to make the Vidyapith a peaceful haven. We thank all our former Principals, Mr. K.V Abraham, Prof. George M. Cherian, Mr. A.C George, Mr. Abraham Philip and Mrs. Aleyamma Mathew whose magical touch has helped the school to grow to such a pinnacle of success. Our special thanks to our present Principal Mr. George Oommen and Rev. George Cherian, God’s messenger with a great vision. Our thanks goes also to our parents and well wishers. We pray God that the Vidyapith will soar higher and will be a source of happiness and consolation to many in the coming years.
We thank the Almighty for the wonderful help and guidance all through the development of the school. We hope, pray and try to help our pupils to study the wisdom of the PAST, understand the reality of the PRESENT and be ready to serve the FUTURE.
